Scam Targets Elderly

The River Oaks Police Department is investigating a scam that appears to target elderly residents.

An individual (with one or more associates accompanying him) approaches an elderly homeowner and attempts to solicit yard work.

The suspect engages the homeowner in conversation by claiming to have completed work at the resident's home previously.

At some point during the conversation, one of the suspects will ask the homeowner if he/she has change for a $100 bill. The suspect then attempts to follow the homeowner into the house as he/she tries to make change. The suspects are targeting money, personal items and yard equipment that can be easily stolen while the homeowner is distracted.

The suspects are described as two or three males with dark complexions. They may be driving a blue or gray sports utility vehicle or van.

Individuals who have been approached or are approached by persons matching this description or method of operation are encouraged to call the Police Department at 817-626-1991.
